Austria
The white variety Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s most widely planted grape, accounting for nearly a third of the country’s vineyards. The wines from this variety (characterized by bright citrus and herbal notes, minerality, and white pepper spice) are admired for their versatility, often pairing exceptionally well with the most challenging ingredients and dishes.
The Lagler family has lived on its estate in Spitz, along the river Danube in the western Wachau, since 1789, though they didn’t begin focusing on grape growing to make their own wine until the 1970s. Previously, they had sold the grapes they grew. Since then, Lagler has produced top-quality wines from their vineyards, located in the top sites of Spitz, including Burgberg, Steinborz, and Tausendeimerberg.
Today, the winery is run by Karl Lagler Jr., who uses natural farming techniques to manage the estate’s 13 hectares of steeply terraced vineyards. The old vines are tended with natural farming techniques to ensure quality and sustainability, and all the work in the vineyards, including the harvest, is done by hand. The winery is a member of Vinea Wachau and has a cellar that is roughly 180 years old.
For the 2022 “Burgberg,” the nose shows notes of lemon and lime, ripe apple, peach, and pear, a touch of pineapple and mango, fresh green herbs, and orchard blossoms. On the palate, the wine is light bodied, defined by its bright, mouthwatering acidity and its minerality. A brilliant, balanced, versatile wine. Pair it with lemony orzo with asparagus, trout baked with tarragon or dill, and soft cheeses.
